How we started

We have always loved taking lots of photographs to record our trips.

It wasn’t until 2011 that we went on our first cruise and in 2015 we decided to start recording videos of them, as photos alone just didn’t seem to do the experience justice.

I started recording with a GoPro hero 4 (sticking with our old Nikon DSLR for photos). I gathered together all of the random clips we had recorded on P&O Britannia (on her second ever cruise) and edited them to music using GoPro free editing software. I had no clue what I was doing. I then uploaded the video to my little-used YouTube account, which we later renamed and became our channel as you see it now.

Talking into the camera was something we actively avoided as after all, our videos were only created as holiday memories (and mostly still are), Kind of like looking back through a photo album, but live action. The videos were never created with an audience in mind. We stuck to this format for a further three videos, ignoring comments suggesting we record a narrative, rather than just music. The videos still did pretty well, but then there were a lot fewer cruise channels on YouTube back then.

During this time we had become big fans of YouTubers such as Casey Neistat, Kara and Nate and The Endless Adventure among others and decided to start dipping our toes in the vlogging water. In January 2019 we spent fifteen nights on Princess cruises Emerald Princess, where we decided to go the whole hog and vlogged (almost) daily for that entire trip. It was a learning curve for sure!

The rest is history. Every trip now we record in the now classic vlog format, speaking to our audience through the camera lens (still some music though) and we’ve significantly upgraded our kit and editing software. It still feels pretty awkward pointing a camera at ourselves and talking into to it, but we’ll get there!

In 2020 we branched out into recording other travel related content, so we’ll see where that takes us.

Thanks for watching our videos on YouTube!
